Interstate 440 North Carolina

Interstate 440 is known as the Benson Beltline and is 16 miles long. It circles North Carolina's capital city of Raleigh. Future plans are to eliminate Interstate 440's duplex with Interstate 40 along the southern edge of the beltline, which will cut about half of Interstate 440's length. For now, though, it is still mostly signed as Inner/Outer, but will be signed as East/West once Interstate 440 has been removed from the Interstate 40 section of the beltline.

As a note, we will use East/West on this page because it will only cover the section that does not run along Interstate 40. For photos of the Interstate 40/Interstate 440 duplex, please visit the Interstate 40 North Carolina - Eastbound - Interstate 85 North to Interstate 95 guide.

Interstate 440 West and U.S. 64 East approaching Exit 15 - Poole Road - 1/2 mile. It appears that the previous median mileage sign was incorrect, as that sign is about 3/4 mile from the interchange. (Photo taken 7/6/05)

Interstate 440 West and U.S. 1 South approaching Exit 8B - Six Forks Road - 3/4 mile. Again, this presents an odd situation, where two signs in a row indicate the same distance to an exit, even though the signs are separated by 1/4 mile. (Photo taken 7/6/05)
